The Debate That Is Mostly Over

 

For decades, dog trainers fell into two broad camps:

  • Traditional ("Balanced") Trainers use leash corrections, prong collars, e-collars, alpha rolls, and dominance theory. They argue R+ is "soft" and does not work for serious dogs.
  • Force-Free Trainers use positive reinforcement and management. They argue aversive methods damage dogs psychologically without delivering better behavior.

Until about 2010, this was opinion versus opinion. Today the question is genuinely settled at the level of peer review. The dominant veterinary behavior bodies (AVSAB, AVMA, ACVB, AAHA) have all reviewed the evidence and concluded the same thing: reward-based methods should be the first-line approach for every dog and every behavior issue.

The traditional camp has not disappeared. The science just stopped supporting them.

 


The Core Studies

 

Hiby, Rooney & Bradshaw (2004), University of Bristol

A survey of 364 dog owners about how they trained their dogs on basic tasks. Reward-based methods correlated with higher obedience and fewer behavior problems. Punishment-based methods correlated with more reported problems, not fewer. Published in Animal Welfare 13:63-69.

Cooper, Cracknell, Hardiman, Wright & Mills (2014), University of Lincoln

A controlled study of pet dogs trained with and without e-collars, published in PLOS ONE. E-collar dogs showed more signs of tension, more yawning, and less environmental engagement than control dogs.

Ziv (2017), Review of 17 studies

Published in Journal of Veterinary Behavior 19:50-60. Reviewed 17 studies (surveys of owners, intervention studies, vet reports). Conclusion: aversive methods jeopardize physical and mental health, and at least three studies suggest reward-based methods produce better outcomes than aversive methods.

Vieira de Castro et al. (2020), Universidade do Porto

Studied 92 companion dogs across 7 training schools using aversive, mixed, or reward-based methods. Saliva cortisol was significantly higher in aversive-trained dogs after sessions, and those dogs scored more "pessimistically" on cognitive bias tests.

China, Mills & Cooper (2020), Frontiers in Veterinary Science

63 dogs with recall problems split into three training groups, 150 minutes of training across 5 days. The authors concluded there is no evidence to indicate that e-collar training is necessary.

The Dominance Theory Collapse

 

Most traditional training stems from dominance theory, the idea that dogs see family as a "pack" with a hierarchical "alpha."

This theory came from David Mech's 1970 wolf research, conducted on captive wolves. Captive wolves in zoos did show dominance hierarchies. The conclusion (later applied to dogs) was: dogs must be controlled similarly.

Here is the problem: captive wolf packs are artificial. Wild wolf packs are family units led by breeding parents, not "alphas" who fought their way to the top.

In his 2008 article "Whatever Happened to the Term Alpha Wolf?", Mech himself walked the concept back. He has spent years asking his original 1970 publisher to stop reprinting the book.

By the time the science changed, the damage was done. Cesar Millan's TV show, prong collar manufacturers, and "balanced" training programs had built entire industries on the original interpretation.

 

E-Collars (Shock Collars): The Specific Evidence

 

E-collars are the most contested tool in the modern debate. Defenders argue modern e-collars use "stim" rather than "shock" and are humane when used correctly.

The published evidence:

  • Cooper et al. (2014, PLOS ONE): E-collar dogs showed measurably more pain-related behaviors versus reward-trained dogs.
  • China, Mills & Cooper (2020, Front Vet Sci): No evidence e-collars improve outcomes over R+ for recall problems.

Prong and Choke Collars

 

Tracheal injuries from neck-pressure tools are well documented. The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine has published a public-education PDF covering documented cases of neck trauma, esophageal damage, and ocular pressure injury in dogs subjected to choke and prong collars over time.

There is also a behavioral cost: dogs associate the pain with whatever they were looking at when the collar fires. If a dog is staring at another dog and the prong tightens, the dog learns "other dogs cause pain." That is how reactivity gets manufactured.

 

Why "Balanced" Training Sounds Reasonable (and Why It Is Not)

 

"Balanced" trainers position themselves as moderates: "I use treats AND corrections, the best of both worlds."

This sounds reasonable but ignores how dogs learn:

  1. Punishment teaches the dog what NOT to do, but not what TO do. Confusion goes up.
  2. Mixed signals create anxiety. The dog cannot predict outcomes, so they become hypervigilant.
  3. Punishment works via suppression, not learning. The dog stops the behavior in the trainer's presence, then resumes when the trainer leaves.
  4. Bond damage is cumulative. Chronic cortisol exposure lowers immune function over time.

Real-World Counterexamples: Force-Free at the Highest Levels

 

Defenders of aversive methods claim "you cannot do serious work without corrections." Reality:

  • US Navy Marine Mammal Program trains dolphins and sea lions for mine detection using purely R+. Aversive methods are impossible underwater.
  • Search and rescue dogs are increasingly R+ trained, including cadaver and wilderness search teams.
  • Guide Dogs for the Blind and Canine Companions train almost entirely on R+.
  • Top sport dog handlers like Susan Garrett (agility world champion) and Denise Fenzi (obedience) train at the highest competitive levels using exclusively force-free methods.

The "But My Dog Is Different" Objection

 

A common defense: "R+ does not work for my breed / my situation / my reactive dog."

Truth: every healthy dog responds to R+. Where R+ appears to "fail" is usually one of these:

  1. Inconsistent timing (treat five seconds late equals no learning)
  2. Low-value rewards (kibble for hard behaviors will not motivate)
  3. Wrong environment (too distracting for the dog's current level)
  4. Unrealistic expectations (expecting perfect recall in two weeks)
  5. Owner gives up before consistency forms (most new behaviors need 50 to 100 reps)

The fix is always: higher-value treats, shorter sessions, more consistency, manage the environment. Not switching to corrections.

Common Myths Worth Killing

 

"R+ creates dogs that only listen for treats." Solid behaviors run on variable reinforcement (occasional treats) plus life rewards. A well-trained R+ dog does not need a treat for every cue.

"R+ does not work for serious aggression." R+ counter-conditioning is the standard of care for aggression in veterinary behavior medicine. What R+ does not do is suppress the behavior overnight, which is what aversive methods appear to do.

"Modern e-collars are humane because they vibrate, not shock." Most "modern" e-collars include shock as a setting. The published evidence does not show meaningful efficacy gains over R+.

 

Frequently Asked Questions

 

Is force-free training "permissive"?
No. Force-free trainers set clear rules and consequences (consequences are the removal of rewards or attention, not pain). Boundaries exist. They are just enforced through reinforcement rather than fear.

My dog was trained on a prong collar for years. Is the damage permanent?
Behaviorally, most dogs recover well once aversive tools are removed and an R+ program begins. Physically, tracheal or neck injuries may need a vet check. The mental rebuild is usually faster than owners expect.

Are there any cases where corrections are justified?
Most veterinary behaviorists would say no for training purposes. Emergency interruption of a life-threatening behavior (running into traffic, attacking another animal) is a separate question, and even then, a startle interrupter (a loud "hey!") is the gentlest option.

Why do some "balanced" trainers get fast results?
